1 - DANGER

Check for signs of danger to you, to casualty and to others.
Make sure you do not place yourself or any bystanders in danger when assisting the casualty.

2 - RESPONSE

Talk & Touch
Is the casualty conscious?
Ask the casualty questions, squeeze casualty's shoulders and hands..

3 - SEND

Ask bystanders to assist if necessary.
In an emergency, call 000 and answer all the operator's questions.

4 - AIRWAY

Check and clear mouth. Gently tilt casualty's head and lift chin (do not do this for infants).
If required, roll casualty on side to clear airway.

5 - BREATHING

Check for signs of breathing.
Place in a stable recovery position.

Observe airway, if breathing, place casualty on their side. If not, commence CPR.

Adults & Children over 1 year

6 - CPR

If unresponsive and not breathing: 30 compressions / 2 breaths.

For Adults & Children over 1 year

  • Compressions
    1 or 2 hands on the centre of the chest, compress 1/3 of chest depth.
  • Breaths
    Tilt head, lift chin and give breaths.
Look for the rise and fall of the chest in between breaths.

 

For Infants (0 - 1 year)

  • Compressions
    2 fingers on the centre of the chest. Compress 1/3 of chest depth.
  • Breaths
    Don’t tilt head. Keep in neutral position, support jaw, cover mouth and nose. Look for the rise and fall of the chest in between breaths.

Continue CPR until responsive or normal breathing returns. If normal breathing returns, place the casualty on their side and maintain an open airway. Closely monitor the casualty.

7 - DEFIBRILLATION

  1. Attach A.E.D (Automated External Defibrillator) if available
  2. Follow audio instructions
